The Kilinochchi District of Sri Lanka has into four Divisional secretariat Divisions, in the name of Karachchi, Kandawalai, Poonakary and Pachchilaipalli. Poonakary is a region which is situated in the Western part of the Kilinochchi District.
Poonakary Divisional secretariat Division is bounded in the North by Uppuaru lagoon, in the East by Karachchi Divisional secretariat divisions and in south by Manthai Division in Mannar District in the west by sea.
Agriculture and fishing is the main livelihood of the people of the division. It comes under the Jaffna electoral District. The Poonakary divisions covers about thirty seven (37%) percentage of the land in the Kilinochchi district and the total extend of the area is 534.7 sq.km. this area contains 448.7 sq.km of land area and 85.69 sq.km of water land. This division contains one (01) Pradesiya Saba with three (03) Sub-Offices, nineteen (19) Grama Niladhari Divisions and Ninety four (93) Villages.
The division is twenty six (26) km away from Kilinochchi and three hundred and eighty four (384) km from Colombo. The main roads in the division are Paranthan- Poonakary, Mannar-Jaffna and those roads are connecting the areas in the south of Sri Lanka as well.
There are 6433 families consisting 22,818 of members in Poonakary division as at 31.12.2012.
On the job training conducted by World Food Programmer’s officials on 7-3-2013 at Poonkary Divisional Secretariat conference hall.
In this Training, Multipurpose cooperative society’s officers and Divisional secretariat staffs who are assigned on World Food Programe participated and learned preparation of cheq roll and forms that are the core document in WFP project.
